Membership in the Association is open to coordinators of local child care planning councils (LPCs) and to city and county child care coordinators. LPCs are funded by the California Department of Education, Child Development Division and are mandated by the Education Code to undertake planning tasks, such as needs assessments. City and county coordinators are funded by their jurisdictions to address local child care issues. Their roles and responsibilities vary.

I also provide opportunities for providers to participate in professional development workshops and trainings through the CARES Plus program. In addition, I am the coordinator of Madera County’s LPC. In my role as coordinator for the LPC I do the LPC reporting; run the AB 212 and CTKS programs. One of our current LPC goals is to become more visible in the community and educate the community about our functions and goals. To move towards this goal we held a screening event for The Raising of America. There was a guided discussion immediately following the screening. This was an opportunity to help create an awareness of the LPC and our mission and vision. I also presented a PowerPoint to discuss the history and functions of the LPC to Madera County Board of Supervisors and audience members. Each year our LPC board members plan to attend and present at the BOS meetings to help become more visible in the community. |

The Coordinator continues to bring awareness about the importance of child care by serving on, and being active on, numerous entities such as the Child Abuse Prevention Council, the Head Start Policy Council, the Early Start Interagency Coalition, and the Community Action Agency Advisory Council. Other duties include attending state and local meetings, disseminating information pertaining to child care issues to the community. The Coordinator works closely with other entities in the community, as well as child care providers and parents who use child care, to better insure access to quality child care for all families throughout the county. |

Michael Garcia was hired as Staff Liaison to the Santa Clara County LPC in December 2005. Before accepting his position with the LPC, Michael worked with the Santa Clara County Office of Education, as administrative support to the Organization Development Department. Prior to working at the SCCOE, Michael has served as an instructional assistant for Rose Child Development Center in Milpitas, ran an after school tutoring program, and served as a counselor for at-risk teens in Santa Clara County, both under Asian American Recovery Services, a local non-profit. Michael holds a B.A. in Child Development from San Jose State University. |
